| Deeply rooted in Taoist observations of natural, seasonal cycles, Five Element Acupuncture focuses on the strength and movement of a person’s chi. Chi can be defined as the cyclical flow of vital energy that is a person’s life force. As chi flows through the body, it flows in and around the organs, nourishing them and helping them to function properly. The body gives us signals- including pain- when these chi pathways are blocked. Energy imbalances or blockages in these pathways are the root of all illness, impairment, and pain. Practitioners of Five Element Acupuncture work to release stress, clear pathway blockages, and restore balance to this flow of life-giving energy. In addition to treating symptoms, Five Element acupuncturists work on a very deep mental, emotional, and spiritual level to identify the root cause of the patient’s illness, and to evaluate and treat the whole person. As we identify, strengthen, and nourish vulnerabilities, we activate the body’s natural healing abilities. The Five Elements- Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood- each represent a distinct quality of the chi energy. When the energies of the Five Elements are in harmony and balance, we experience a sense of well being, clarity of mind, openness of heart, and resistance to disease. Acupuncture needles are sterile, very fine and flexible- about the diameter of a human hair. In most cases, insertion by a skilled practitioner is performed without discomfort. Most patients find the treatments very relaxing, and many fall asleep during treatment. Acupuncture works with the body, strengthening and balancing energy, and thus promotes self-healing. Cathy Benedetto, Dipl.Ac., specializes in Five Element Acupuncture. Cathy received her Bachelors degree (B.F. A.) from The Catholic University of America. In 1997 she received her Masters degree (M.Ac.) from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute, having studied under many renowned acupuncturists including J.R. Worsley, Diane Connelly, Bob Duggan, Giovanni Macciocia, and Ted Kaptchuk. Cathy is nationally certified (NCCAOM) and is licensed to practice in both Maryland and South Carolina. She is additionally licensed in Maryland to treat animals. |
